Thirty three percent of IT administrators utilize more than 20 storage applications, on average, according to Primary Data.
More than 50 percent of IT administrators manage more than 10 different types of storage solutions on a day-to-day basis, while 33 percent manage more than 20 solutions, according to a recent study from Primary Data.
The data virtualization solution provider surveyed an unspecified number of respondents in the U.S. earlier this month, including IT administrators from companies ranging from small and midsize businesses to large enterprises. While the majority of respondents who use more than 20 different types of storage solutions came from enterprise IT admins, primary storage said the complexity of disassociated storage solutions is a problem for companies of all sizes.
Primary Data CEO Lance Smith said the survey results confirm that companies are in desperate need of an integrated solution for all of their storage options. Indeed, “managing storage growth” was listed as the top concern in EMC’s 2013-2014 report, “Managing Storage: Trends, Challenges and Options,” and a February 2016 Netskope report found that enterprises use an average of 23 cloud storage applications, even though 76 percent are not enterprise-ready.
Another issue detailed in the report found that enterprises routinely manage a large number of storage vendors as well – roughly two-thirds of respondents utilize storage systems from 3-9 vendors. Only 36 percent of respondents said they utilize services from 1-2 storage vendors.
Of course, Primary Data suggests utilizing its DataSphere platform to unify all of their storage solutions, but there are other means to cut down on storage solution clutter, including a reevaluation of your company’s critical assets. Making the switch to virtual storage as opposed to legacy storage solutions is another option that can help reduce the amount of options in play, and enable IT administrators to focus on different projects.
