GroundWork Open Source says nearly one-third of its newest customers are deploying its network management software on Ubuntu. Here are the early details.

GroundWork launched version 5.3 of its network management software a few days ago. So far, 29 percent of the deployments run on Ubuntu, estimates David Dennis, senior director of product marketing at GroundWork.

That statistic took GroundWork and Dennis by surprise. Ubuntu has essentially come from nowhere to compete with CentOS as a preferred platform for running GroundWork's software.

GroundWork first introduced support for Ubuntu in November 2007. But in recent months, Canonical has been promoting Ubuntu Server Edition's growing momentum in small, midsize and large organizations. Clearly, GroundWork Open Source's customers have taken notice.
