Nakivo, provider of data protection products aimed at SMBs for VMware (NYSE: VMW) virtualized environments with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) applications, is offering a free version of its Backup and Replication v2.0 software that enables local, remote and cloud backups for operational, archival and portability uses.

With Backup and Replication v2.0 Free Edition, SMBs can protect, encrypt, compress and de-duplicate data both onsite with local storage and offsite with public clouds. The downloadable software installs in about a minute without reading manuals and users can become proficient on it in only a few minutes, according to Nakivo officials. There are no limitations on the number of hosts and virtual machines (VMs), and users can readily upgrade to the full version by replacing the license file.

In addition, the software’s Web 2.0 user interface allows users to manage any and all aspects of data protection from any device, including tablets. Infrastructure and VM monitoring can be done 24 x 7, with email notifications for errors or changes and job grouping for easier management.

According to Nakivo, with Backup and Replication 2.0 Free Edition, VMs can be backed up locally, remotely over WAN, or to Dropbox--an easy to use, secure, and cost-effective offsite cloud storage--enabling small businesses to save VMs for long-term storage due to legal or regulatory requirements or to prevent unintentional data loss before VM decommissioning.

The Free Edition stays current with latest vSphere technology including vSphere 5.1 and can be installed on Windows 8 or Windows 2012 Server. The product is VM OS and storage agnostic and can back up any VMware v4.1 VM or higher to any VMware-supported storage.

Nakivo maintains a reseller program with which partners operate as agents, recommending the vendor’s products and services in exchange for compensation. The company is a member of VMware’s Technology Alliance Partner program.
