This week we had a chance to check in with Dave Ryan, executive vice president and regional head of the Americas for Tata Communications, the enterprise telecom solutions division of the Tata group.
Although he is not a channel chief in title, Ryan is responsible for building Tata Communications' global stategy initiatives and in bullding the company's customer base in the United States. He has also worked in executive-level positions at companies including NTT America and Global One (Sprint International).
What is Meet the Chiefs?
Meet the Chiefs shines the spotlight on the channel’s head honchos and offers an opportunity to learn a little bit about the person beyond his or her company profile. Click on each photo to learn more about the channel chief you’re viewing.

Ryan: My first real job out of college was at WANG Laboratories, located in their HQ in Lowell, Massachusetts. The role was in their Bids & Proposals group and my job was responding to RFP's in support of a bunch of sales people. It was then that I decided to pursue a career in sales. The real life learning experience was my feeble attempt to pursue a date in the office with this girl named Laurie, who wanted NOTHING to do with me. Years later as I was well into my sales career, I learned that Laurie had married Dr Wang's number 1 son, Freddie Wang. This helped keep my ego in check for decades to come.
The VAR Guy says: Office romances can be a slippery slope. Perhaps it was for the best!
Ryan: My dream car is the one that sits in my garage with the cover on, a 2014 Jaguar Supercharged F-Type. Unfortunately it spends the winter months waiting for that first Spring day.
The VAR Guy says: You actually own your dream car, which is pretty amazing. Now don't let it sit there under a sheet, get out there and show it off!
Ryan: I enjoyed the warmth of Florida for six days of golf.
The VAR Guy says: How lovely! Florida is a wonderful place for a good game of golf, so long as there aren't any alligators in the water hazards!
Ryan: My favorite reads are far removed from the industry and my day-to-day job. I will read ANY fiction novel (thriller, mystery, good vs evil, etc.) that will keep me entertained and let my mind wander.
The VAR Guy: When we find a good mystery novel, we have a hard time putting it down. Bring on the intrigue!
Ryan: My last splurge item was my 2014 Jaguar F-Type.
The VAR Guy says: That's one heck of a spurge! Definitely worthwhile, now that the warm weather is here to stay.
Ryan: I enjoy watching "Madam Secretary" with actress Tea Leoni. The show mixes current event stories with everyday family life. But I have to record it because I hate the commercial breaks on TV.
The VAR Guy says: "Madam Secretary" is a great show! It definitely scratches the itch we have for a good political drama with a strong female lead.
Ryan: I loved fire trucks as a kid and could play in a sand box with my trucks all day long. My mom loved it because she didn't have to watch me, she knew exactly where I was. The firefighting career never took off. I got my first job in sales and never looked back.
The VAR Guy says: In a way, you are a firefighter of sorts - you just help to put out fires in the channel instead of ones in the forest! That's equally as important, in our humble opinion.
Ryan: My favorite all time movie is "The Shawshank Redemption" with Tim Robbins. The story of a guy who is wrongly accused of killing his wife, spends decades being tormented in jail, keeps his mind on a single goal and never looks back. The narration by Morgan Freeman makes this the most riveting movie I have ever watched. I’ve seen it at least 10 times.
The VAR Guy says: "No matter how many times you watch this movie, it never gets old - or stops being emotional, for that matter.
