The Oracle VM 3.0 Opportunity

Oracle VM 3.0, the latest release of Oracle server virtualization, is designed for rapid enterprise application deployment and integrated lifecycle management of physical and virtual servers including the application.

As companies today focus on delivering complete solutions to their customers and use virtualization to help transform their data centers from traditional computing to cloud-based infrastructures, Oracle VM’s application-driven architecture is uniquely positioned to deliver the agility needed by IT.

Oracle VM is tightly integrated with Oracle VM Manager as well as Oracle Enterprise Manager for complete lifecycle management from physical to virtual servers to cloud services. For example, with Oracle VM Manager, available Oracle VM network configurations -- from bonding to setting up network bridges, and virtual machines and storage configuration -- can be configured from the manager itself. Features such as distributed power management allow physical servers to be turned off and scaled back overnight when usage is low. With built-in virtual server management, large populations of virtual server pools can be designed, configured and deployed to production in a matter of minutes.

Additional Benefits:

  • Rapid deployment of enterprise applications
  • Integrated lifecycle management from Disk to Applications, Enables lower cost of ownership
  • Supports Windows, Oracle Solaris, Linux workloads
  • 100+ Oracle VM Templates available for enterprise software
  • New Oracle VM Specialization available through Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN)
  • Oracle software deployed in Oracle VM is certified

Oracle VM 3.0 vs. the Competition

There are three main ways Oracle VM 3.0 stands out amongst the competition: it offers complete lifecycle management for applications and entire server environments from physical to virtual servers; it features prebuilt, Oracle-certified, production enterprise application templates; and it is single vendor-supported, which will eliminate “finger-pointing” at many areas of the solution.

The aforementioned Oracle VM Templates are virtual machine images based on Oracle VM and include preconfigured enterprise applications. Using the templates, partners can deploy large applications such as Oracle Real Application Clusters or multitier applications including Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Database in hours or minutes instead of days or weeks. With 100-plus templates, partners and customers can quickly deploy Oracle software or their own.

Oracle’s offering is unique because it owns Oracle Linux, the enterprise OS kernel Oracle Database 11g, and Oracle Fusion Middleware. In particular, appliances from VMware do not use enterprise-grade Linux distributions. RedHat and SUSE require users to purchase a license/support to distribute binaries for their comparable products, but Oracle does not.

For Partners

With Oracle VM 3.0 and the rich library of prebuilt templates, partners can expect to expand their own service offering to end customers by delivering application deployment services and management. System integrators can use Oracle VM and Oracle VM templates as a part of a standard deployment methodology or for migration to cloud, with rapid virtualization of Oracle enterprise applications and management of the entire stack using Oracle Enterprise Manager.

In addition, partners can build their own Oracle VM templates and distribute them along with Oracle VM and Oracle Linux.

Adding It All Up

Virtualization is a fundamental technology that helps Oracle’s partners grow their business via implementation practices and service offerings that include Oracle VM and other components of the Oracle stack. Plus, it is free to download and distribute. Oracle provides partners with the most complete server virtualization solution and management portfolio of products to deploy and expand their offerings with the Oracle stack.
