Hadoop and Big Data vendor MapR has tripled its first-quarter bookings over the previous year.
There's no question that Big Data is now a huge market, but what may surprise some observers is just how rapidly it continues to expand. That growth is evident in reports such as the announcement this week from MapR, which delivers Big Data solutions based on the open source Apache Hadoop platform, that first-quarter growth has tripled over last year.
MapR, which operates mostly on a subscription-based model, announced the tripling of its bookings on Monday. The achievement complements other recent expansion by the company, which now operates in 10 countries in addition to its original base in North America, and which counts a broad portfolio of customers representing a diverse set of fields, from financial services to software companies to telecoms.
MapR is celebrating the growth as a reflection of strong adoption of Hadoop-based Big Data solutions within the channel. "With the majority of MapR software deployed in production environments, Hadoop implementations are demonstrating a profound impact on operations," MapR CEO John Schroeder said. "Companies are moving aggressively to impact business events in real time and 2014 will be another year of significant growth for MapR."
MapR has also enjoyed other significant milestones and recognitions over the past year. Forrester named it a leading Hadoop vendor in a report from Q1 2014, which also highlighted MapR's focus on adding value to the core open source Hadoop code. In February, the company announced integration with the HP Vertica analytics platform for Big Data. And the MapR Hadoop distribution has kept up-to-speed with the latest Big Data performance innovations, including YARN and Apache Spark.
